Summary
The Report is drawn from the responses by all Schools of the University of Technology, Sydney to a project to define and enhance quality in teaching, but it is explicitly not an attempt to summarise the individual School Reports. The Report identifies examples of good practice across the University, identifies areas that the Schools feel warrant enhancement and discusses the strategies proposed for enhancing performance in those areas. The examples in the Report arise from the School Reports and are listed without comment. The final Section of the Report makes some comments on the ways in which ideas from one particular academic area might find applicability in a wider domain. The Appendix contains a list of the reports summarised and a prose teaching best practice checklist. The ideas from the School Reports are collated in four general categories . The categories are:
Teaching, creating a supportive learning environment and monitoring and supporting the quality of teachingCurriculum development (including design for learning), course review and relations with industry/commerce/employers
Assessment issues
Student support mechanisms (including support for identified/target groups of students)
There is much potential for Schools, other elements of the University and other Universities to be prompted by material in the Report to tackle a particular problem in a new way that is an adaptation of something used elsewhere in this University - possibly for a rather different purpose. It is abundantly clear from the School Reports that an outstanding example of 'good practice' in all areas that the Report addresses is represented by the Project itself. The School Reports demonstrate the benefit arising from opportunities to reflect on the issues that arise in teaching and learning and on existing knowledge in the area.
The usefulness of the Report will depend to a considerable extent on the ingenuity of academic units and their staff in identifying useful ideas and in applying them in their own context.
